3 Types of Diagnostic Imaging to Hasten Your Treatment

Anyone can suffer an injury. Whether it’s the result of a sports accident, slip and fall, or overuse in everyday life, that injury and the pain that it brings can stop you in your tracks.
Luckily, your body is equipped to heal — and expert orthopedic care can speed up the process. Our doctors at Manhattan Orthopedics specialize in diagnosing and treating all types of musculoskeletal injury, so you can get back to doing what you love.
But before you start treatment, we must first diagnose your condition. Using diagnostic imaging, we evaluate your body from the inside — without ever making an incision. Read on to learn more about the types of diagnostic imaging that give you a leg up on treatment.
The benefits of diagnostic imaging
Some types of injury come with obvious, visible signs of damage. But more often than not, injuries aren’t so obvious from the outside. Swelling can obscure the affected area, and identifying the cause of your pain isn’t possible with a visual exam alone.
Diagnostic imaging gives our team an inside look at your body’s structures. Imaging is noninvasive, which means no incisions are required, and it helps us evaluate the type and extent of your injury.
By reviewing images, we can diagnose your condition and develop a treatment plan that fits your needs. What does that mean for you? A faster track to feeling better.
Our diagnostic imaging services
Diagnostic imaging is essential to delivering quality orthopedic care. That’s why our team at Manhattan Orthopedics specializes in the latest and best diagnostic imaging technology.
At our offices, you’ll find:
Diagnostic ultrasound
Diagnostic ultrasound, or sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of internal body structures.
In a diagnostic ultrasound, a probe sends pulsed soundwaves through your skin. When soundwaves meet tissue in your body, they bounce back and create an echo. The echo is then transcribed into a still image.
Ultrasound imaging is a useful tool in diagnosing soft tissue injuries. If our team suspects you have an injury affecting muscle, tendons, ligaments, or even cartilage, they may perform a diagnostic ultrasound.
Diagnostic X-ray
X-rays are a type of radiation known as electromagnetic waves. X-ray technology allows doctors to create images of the inside of your body and examine your musculoskeletal system without making any incisions.
At Manhattan Orthopedics, our radiology suite has cutting-edge X-ray equipment. X-rays taken with our machines deliver higher-quality images and expose patients to much lower amounts of radiation.
X-ray imaging is an effective diagnostic tool for many types of musculoskeletal injury, including fractured bones, joint injuries, and tumors.
Diagnostic fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a method of X-ray imaging that involves taking multiple images to capture motion. We inject an iodine solution, or contrast medium, into the area around a painful joint.
Then, we use a fluoroscope to send short X-ray bursts to the area. The contrast medium highlights the structures of your joint, and fluoroscopy creates moving, real-time images on a computer screen.
Our team may recommend fluoroscopy if you have joint pain with no clear cause. It’s particularly effective in identifying knee and shoulder problems.
When you suffer an injury, diagnostic testing is the first step to getting well. Schedule your first appointment at Manhattan Orthopedics online, or call our offices in Astoria, Brooklyn, or Manhattan, New York, today.
